The Call of the Wild

In language classes, I am reading a book called The Call of the Wild by Jack London. This is a book about a dog called Buck, and his life which is full of harsh experiences. However, he overcomes all the problems one by one, and he finally knows: Only the strong will survive.

I have not read much yet, and so far, But I have enjoyed it because it is a story about a dog and it has been sale to a saloonkeeper. He has undergone some torture and insult. The way the author describes this character is interesting, since he is using personification to describe a dog, and showing the dog’s emotion and thinking.

So this makes me thinking about the real life, when we meet hardship, insult or desperate situation, shall we give up, or still facing the problems with beliefs. Of course we all know the right response to this is never give up, but things always goes off from what we think when we do encounter them. It is definitely easy to give up when different emotions all attacks our minds.

The importance is to enrich our own minds, and get strong in minds, as the book said: Only the strong will survive…

Reflection on ‘Human Rights’

In this unit, we are learning about Human Rights. Certainly, this was a big topic. As I go through, I made a glance at some of human rights, and I study deeply about certain human rights.

I mainly studied about two human rights, the first one is one of those 30 human rights listed by the united nations: A man is not guilty until proven to be.  This is definitely a controversial topic, and it is also controversial in our class. I had a few debate with Ana, Max and Hadiya, and we still did not persuade each other till now. However, it is more significant about how we went through this topic, how we think, research and try to persuade others. I struggle with this topic because sometimes I cannot fully convey what I mean when these sorts of debate was going on. But fortunately, we all remember to say our idea about the issue rather than the person we are debating with. (Though someone was a bit rude.)

The second human right is The Right to Die. This is a famous issue among the world and we learned this right by doing Wikispaces and creating our own pages (<a href=”http://lemanchengdu.wikispaces.com/Ana%2C+Jack+and+Max+-+The+Right+to+Die”>http://lemanchengdu.wikispaces.com/Ana%2C+Jack+and+Max+-+The+Right+to+Die</a>). We learned how to research and express ourselves effectively. It took us about a whole month to finish the Wikispaces. I am especially proud of our layout. You might think this is not important, but the layout is also how the pages are appealing to the readers. Besides ours(Max, Ana and me), I especially like Sophie’s page (<a href=”http://lemanchengdu.wikispaces.com/Sophie+ +the+right+to+democracy”>http://lemanchengdu.wikispaces.com/Sophie+-+the+right+to+democracy</a>), she uses various texts to illustrate her topic, The Right to Democracy.  Ian, Cleophee and Abdullah’s page(<a href=”http://lemanchengdu.wikispaces.com/Sung+Won%2C+Abdullah+and+Cleophee+-+Freedom+of+Expression”>http://lemanchengdu.wikispaces.com/Sung+Won%2C+Abdullah+and+Cleophee+-+Freedom+of+Expression</a> ) also looks cool. Especially their discussion has some debate going on, though sometimes useless and unnecessary.

It was a huge unit, and I have also learned something useful.
